Wigan Council

The Challenge:

In March 2020, the UK went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Millions of people were now staying at home and household waste volumes increased by around 30% whilst many MRF’s across the UK experienced staffing and capacity issues. This national disruption resulted in many Councils, including Wigan, not being able to process significant volumes of the recyclable materials they collected and having to send them for disposal.

The Re-Gen Solution:

Re-Gen approached the Council to offer short-term emergency MDR processing support to ensure their community’s recyclate kept moving throughout the crisis. Re-Gen offered a fully inclusive service utilising our own fleet of trucks, state of the art processing facilities and award winning commodities team to manage the significant increase in waste volume the Council had to deal with. Within 3 days of first contact Re-Gen were collecting the first loads of MDR from the Council’s Waste Transfer Station and transferring them to our MRF in Newry.

The Outcome:

With our emergency support service, the Council managed to save hundreds of tonnes of recyclables that may otherwise have gone to disposal.
